Or both?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Originally published in 2018; revised May 2023<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of my online courses is called <a href=\"https:\/\/illis.se\/education\/courses\/getting-behaviour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Getting Behaviour &#8211; The Foundations of Animal Training.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/illis.se\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/05\/Getting-behavoiur-logo-for-PPT-films.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4401\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>My students are really excited about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m very proud of it, and I had this idea to share part of the course for free, here on the blog. The course is about 13 hours long and contains 109 short videos, so I wanted to pick <em>one<\/em> of those videos and share with you. The best one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was difficult. Which video to choose?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>After racking my brain for a while, I asked my current students for their help in making the selection, and they eagerly jumped at the opportunity and suggested a handful of their personal favourites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, they all suggested that I share <em>different<\/em> chapters &#8211; in fact, there was only <em>one<\/em> chapter that got several votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Two votes<\/em>, to be exact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kinda disappointing, I had sort of hoped that the students would all point to one video being <em>The Best Video In The Course<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No such thing, apparently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But one of those videos actually got two votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I&#8217;m sharing it here, on this page. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/illis.se\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/05\/What-is-behaviour.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"753\" height=\"564\" src=\"https:\/\/illis.se\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/05\/What-is-behaviour.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/illis.se\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/05\/What-is-behaviour.png 753w, https:\/\/illis.se\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/05\/What-is-behaviour-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 753px) 100vw, 753px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Training is about the animal learning and changing his behaviour. But what is behaviour, then?<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So, without further ado, here&#8217;s chapter 2, called &#8220;what is training &#8211; and behaviour&#8221; from Module 1 of the Getting Behaviour course. It&#8217;s one of the longest videos of the course, normally they&#8217;re two to eight minutes long. This one&#8217;s 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Toggle the little blue CC-button at the bottom right of the film to see the English subtitles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is behaviour?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may think you know\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>or maybe not..! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re not alone \u2013 even behavioural biologists disagree on this topic. And one would expect them to know!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/208388437?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"580\" height=\"435\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than the Dead Man\u2019s rule \u201cif a dead man can do it, it ain\u2019t behaviour\u201d, I much prefer Bob and Marian Bailey\u2019s expression: \u201cif the animal isn\u2019t dead, there\u2019s behavior\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I mention that animals learn from each other. They also learn from humans. Some species can even be taught to imitate humans. Here\u2019s the do-as-I-do method, introduced by Claudia Fugazza.
