Below is a selection of relevant publications. In addition to these, I&#8217;ve authored about a dozen more scientific articles. If you&#8217;re interested in reading them, just click the hyperlinks below and I&#8217;ll email them to you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Learning Teacher&#8217;s magazine: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/illis.se\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/Westlund-What-Teachers-could-learn_the-Learning-Teacher-Magazine.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What teachers could learn from animal trainers.<\/a><\/strong> <em>I have the distinct feeling that the average teacher&#8217;s education doesn&#8217;t provide tools to handle unruly behaviour. Animal trainers are faced with many of the same challenges, and can&#8217;t resort to language to solve them &#8211; they have a plethora of useful techniques&#8230; &nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Journal of Veterinary Behaviour: <strong><a href=\"mailto: article.request.feeding@illis.se?subject=Please send me your article on treat feeding\">To feed or not to feed &#8211; counterconditioning in the veterinary clinic.<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;<em>When<\/em><em>&nbsp;consulting with veterinarians I&nbsp;found them reluctant to use treats to reduce fear during consultations in the vet clinic,&nbsp;because of the fear of complications in association with sedation. So, I went to the literature to see for myself how risky it is. It turns out that&nbsp;there are mostly disadvantages with&nbsp;not feeding treats, and mostly advantages with doing so.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applied Animal Behaviour Science: <i>I started out by writing a<\/i><strong> <a href=\"mailto: request_critiqueMelfi@illis.se?subject=Please send me your critique on Melfi's training article\">critique<\/a><\/strong> <em>on an article discussing<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0168159113001196\">\u00a0<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0168159113001196\"><strong>whether training is enrichment<\/strong><\/a><em>,\u00a0and also wrote <\/em><strong><a href=\"mailto:request_training_beyond@illis.se?subject=Please send me your article on training being enrichment and beyond\">Training is enrichment &#8211; and beyond!<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><em>&#8211; arguing that not only is some training enrichment, but you can obtain certain welfare effects\u00a0with training that are inaccessible with conventional enrichment.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Journal of Neuroscience Methods: <strong><a title=\"kritik-artikel\" href=\"mailto:request_critiqueNC3R1@illis.se?subject=Please send me your first NC3R critique\">Can conditioned reinforcers and variable-ratio schedules make food- and fluid control redundant? A comment on the NC3Rs Working Group&#8217;s report.<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><em>\u00a0My first critique article discussing the NC3Rs expert group&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em><a title=\"prescott deprivation\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0165027010005157\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>paper<\/strong><\/a><em>\u00a0on the use\u00a0of deprivation in behavioural neuroscience. I discussed some overlooked techniques to\u00a0increase motivation\u00a0without having to resort to ethically questionable techniques affecting welfare. The Working Group\u00a0<\/em><a title=\"prescott defence\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0165027011004973\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>responded<\/strong><\/a><em>, after which I got the final say in <\/em><strong><a href=\"mailto:request_critique_NC3R2@illis.se?subject=Please send me your second critique on the NC3R paper\">Questioning the necessity of food- and fluid regimes<\/a><\/strong><em><strong><a href=\"mailto:request_critique_NC3R2@illis.se?subject=Please send me your second critique on the NC3R paper\">.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I write blog posts about behaviour management, but also scientific papers.
