I\u2019m an Associate Professor of Ethology, and I&#8217;m passionate about helping animals thrive with people.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I used to be late for school as a kid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My mother was mystified, because she sent me off with plenty of time to spare \u2013 and yet, 8-year old Karolina would invariably arrive at the classroom door after the bell rang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, mom decided to tag along to see why a 12-minute walk took almost half an hour. And she realized that I stopped to engage with all the critters in the small patch of forest that I passed on my way to school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cLook mom, a dead mouse baby!\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;I exclaimed, pointing to a small shriveled silhouette half-hidden among the leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My mom loved telling this story, relating her frustrations with all the bugs and birds I showed her that morning. She told me to stop looking around and start walking (more like striding, actually), so that I could get to school on time and get down to the serious business of learning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the thing is, I&nbsp;<em>was<\/em>&nbsp;learning. About habitats, behaviour, contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Well, that\u2019s a sweet story, Karolina, but how is it relevant here?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks for asking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well. I was on a learning journey. And my mom was unaware of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And here\u2019s why it\u2019s relevant:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Our animals are also on learning journeys.<\/em>&nbsp;And we, their guardians, are often ignorant of the fact that they\u2019re learning in the first place, or what they\u2019re learning \u2013 or that we can influence what they learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cat visiting the vet is on a learning journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dog, meeting another dog while out on a walk, is on a learning journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The horse, being ridden by a new rider, is on a learning journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/illis.se\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/09\/dog-2008922_960_720.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6823\" srcset=\"https:\/\/illis.se\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/09\/dog-2008922_960_720.jpg 960w, https:\/\/illis.se\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/09\/dog-2008922_960_720-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/illis.se\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/09\/dog-2008922_960_720-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Is the animal trotting down his learning journey on his own \u2013 or have you stepped in next to him?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically, it\u2019s not until the animal becomes fearful, aggressive or destructive that we start&nbsp;wondering where they might have picked up that undesirable behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And once that\u2019s happened, veterinary consultations, hiring a trainer or behaviour consultant to help address that problem behaviour could easily cost thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand,&nbsp;<em>being aware of,&nbsp;<\/em>and indeed<em>&nbsp;in charge of,&nbsp;<\/em>the animal\u2019s learning journey can help us avoid those expenses, the worry and the guilt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The passionate interest in animals has stayed with me, and I\u2019m still on that learning journey. I\u2019ve pored over different scientific disciplines with regards to animal behaviour, learning and welfare. Attended countless conferences about enrichment and training. Written more than a dozen scientific papers on those topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve spent more than 20 years teaching about why and how animals do what they do, and what we as animal caregivers can do to get happy animals that thrive with people. How we can help&nbsp;<em>guide animals through their learning journey<\/em>.
